Conditional Sentences are also known as Conditional Clauses or If Clauses. They are used to express that the action in the main clause (without if) can only take place if a certain condition (in the clause with if) is fulfilled. There are three types of Conditional Sentences.
TYPE 0 (ZERO)
If + simple present + simple present
if clause ve gerekse main clause’daki cümleciklerin zamanı simple present tense’tedir.
- If you press the button, the machine switches off.
- If you go in the best seats, you get a free drink.
If cümlesi ile diğer cümle yer değiştirebilir.
The machine switches off, if you press this button.
- If it rains, the ground gets wet.
- The bell rings if you push this button.
TYPE 1
If + simple present + will/can/may
If 'den sonraki cümle geniş zaman ile kurulurken, diğer cümle ise gelecek zamanla oluşturulur.
- It will break if you drop it.
We will be ready if you come at ten.
I will pick you up at the park if you phone me.
- If you come at ten, we will be ready.
- If you phone me, I will pick you up at the park.
TYPE 2
If + simple past + would/could/might
Type 2 koşul cümlelerinde cümlenin yapısı geçmiş zamandır ama aslında söz konusu olan şey içinde bulunan zamandır. Var olan dışında bir şeyi varsayarak, bunun gerçek olduğu varsayıldığında neler olabileceğini görmek için Type 2 kalıbını kullanırız.
We might finish the work on time if they helped us.
If she didn’t have an exam, she wouldn’t be studying now.
- If she were ( was ) a man, she might protect her family.
TYPE 3
If+ Past Perfect + would/could/might have +V3
Geçmişteki bir durumun gerçekleşmemiş olduğu varsayılarak yapılan geçmiş zaman (unreal past).
If he had driven carefully, he wouldn’t have had an accident.
If you hadn’t informed him, he couldn’t have gotten out of trouble.
If it were to have rained, we would have stayed at home and slept till noon
MIXED CONDITIONALS SENTENCES ( KARIŞIK ŞARTLI CÜMLELER)
“Mixed Conditional” farklı tür koşul cümlelerinin bir araya gelmesiyle oluşur. Bu tür cümlelerde koşu cümlesi ile ana cümledeki zaman her zaman farklıdır. Bu yapıda type 2 ve type 3 birlikte kullanılır.
She didn’t write down Ali’s number, so she can’t call him now.
(O, Hasan’nin numarasını kaydetmedi, bu yüzden şimdi Hasan’yi arayamaz.)
So’dan önceki kısım past tense, so dan sonraki kısım present tense’dir. Yani bu yüzden past kısım type 3, present kısım type 2 olacaktır.
If she had written down Ali’s number, she could call him now.
( Eğer o, Ali’nin numarasını kaydetmiş olsaydı, şimdi Ali’yi arayabilirdi.)
